In fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) the gene for eye colour is on the X chromosome, and the red allele (Xᵂ) is dominant to the white allele (Xʷ). Females are XX and males are XY; the Y carries no copy of this gene. A student crosses a true-breeding white-eyed female with a red-eyed male, then lets the F1 flies mate with each other to produce an F2.
