Counting through meiosis
Topic: Meiosis & genetic diversity
A student follows one germ-line cell of an insect with 2n = 8 through meiosis under the microscope. At each stage she counts the chromosomes (by counting centromeres) and the DNA molecules (each chromatid is one DNA molecule). In this species 1C, the DNA of one unreplicated haploid set, is 4 chromatids' worth of DNA.
Fill in the number of chromosomes and the number of DNA molecules (chromatids) in one cell at each stage.
Cell in G1, before S phase
ChromosomesDNA molecules (chromatids)Same cell after S phase (G2)
ChromosomesDNA molecules (chromatids)Each cell after meiosis I
ChromosomesDNA molecules (chromatids)Each cell after meiosis II
ChromosomesDNA molecules (chromatids)
